From the early times, Belmonte’s urban growth thrived with the frontier wars with Aragon and Castile, forcing the monarchy to improve the castle’s defenses. Venturing through this open art gallery town, you will also learn the history of thefounder of Brazil, Pedro Álvares Cabral, where this was his hometown.
However, there’s a hidden history in the streets, houses, and alleys of Belmonte. From the 13th century onwards, Jews settled in this border town, creating a Jewish community that increased after the Expulsion of Spanish Jews, by the Catholic Kings. Today, you can always visit the remnants of the past of the People of the Book in the Jewish Museum which showcases the history of the Crypto-Jews, who secretly practiced their laws of the Torah.
Local craftsman with their shops and stores can be found while walking through the cobbled streets and quaint squares. Don’t leave Belmonte without trying its local flavors like the Portuguese stew, the Caldo Verde (green broth) soup, and, being nearby Serra da Estrela, its delicious cheese.
