Located in the center of the Portuguese territory, Viseu is the perfect blend of history and gastronomy for a weekend destination if you’re visiting Portugal.
A city that is popularly known for its green gardens, especially due to being surrounded by the cliffs and vineyards of the Dão wine region that invite many wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts to learn a bit more about this charming region. Strolling throughout the old town, Portuguese cobblestones are also present in Viseu. Be amazed when you arrive at the 12th century old Cathedral of Santa Maria, one of the finest examples of Manueline architecture with its chapels and blue tiles.
On a rainy day or if you’re not much of an outdoor, the Grão Vasco Museum is a mandatory stop when in Viseu. Astonishing paintings, sculptures, ceramic works, and much more are undoubtedly worthy to visit to get to know more about Portuguese art and culture. For nature and adventure lovers, by bike or foot, discover the Ecopista do Dão, an old railroad converted into a hiking path. This trail is considered the longest one in Portugal, encompassing other towns such as Santa Comba Dão and Tondela.
Viseu is no exception in what concerns having a local and traditional gastronomy. Inserted in the Dão wine region, the Dão wine is one of the renowned wines in the world, particularly the red wines made from the grapes Touriga Nacional. The city also has a regional type of sweet bread called Broa de Viseu, as well as the famous Pastéis de Vouzela, made by nuns in the old town of Vouzela, an egg-custard tart powdered with a bit of sugar.
