For hiking enthusiasts and trail seekers, just outside of Porto lies one of the most spectacular natural ecosystems in Portugal.
The Peneda-Gerês National Park, also known as Gerês, is the perfect place to be in the moment, learn a bit more about the Portuguese and even Spanish fauna and flora, as well as enjoy the lush green landscapes this northern gem has to offer. Being a park that covers a huge portion of the Iberian Peninsula, you can park your car just at one of the entrances of the park, and be mesmerized by the astonishing cascading waterfalls, such as the Tahiti Waterfall, which will ensure blissful moments, especially during the summer season if you’d like to swim in these pristine waters.
For outdoor activities, the Gerês also packs up the notch with a few challenging trails with panoramic views, kayaking adventures, and climbing peaks for those who are more adventurous. Nevertheless, if you are a history buff and would like to visit cultural villages or charming little towns with centuries of history such as Castro Laboreiro, Pitões das Júnias, Soajo, and many more.
This delightful region is mandatory if you are staying in the north of Portugal for a few days. Make sure you bring your camera, hiking gear, and waterproofs if you are visiting Portugal during the Fall or Winter, and be prepared to venture through this green sanctuary.
