A northern jewel that is still nowadays considered a bit off the beaten path for a quick day trip from Porto.
When arriving in Amarante, the Tâmega River presents you with a picturesque and romantic atmosphere, giving you the feeling this town was pulled from a fantasy book or movie. The perfect combination of natural landscapes with 17th-century architecture. The most iconic landmarks are the colossal São Gonçalo Church, one of the most exuberant religious architecture in the north of Portugal; the São Gonçalo Bridge which was used as a military beacon against the French troops of Napoleon; the Amadeo-Souza Cardoso museum, one of the most important painters of the early 1900s, if you are looking for any indoor activities.
When strolling through this quaint old town, you will lose yourself in the narrow streets, old villas and manor houses that portray Portugal's Renaissance times, secluded cafes and stores, and have a taste of the authentic northern cuisine, since the best restaurants are located in downtown. After spending a few hours visiting the main highlights, why not take a quick boat tour around the river, and be blown away by the green color palette of the mountain of Marão.
